News Search Form

The News search form allows you to easily build news searches using connectors, document sections and Index Terms.

Enter up to five rows of search terms, document sections, and connectors.

The first drop-down list specifies where the term should appear:

Anywhere
Anywhere in the text
In the Headline
In the title of the news article
At the Start
In the headline or lead paragraph
Company
In the company name field
In the Indexing
Within the Index Terms of a document
Major Mentions
In the headline, lead paragraph or indexing
3 or More Mentions
Finds articles where the word or phrase appears at least three times
Note: If you click on the More... link, add search terms in the two additional rows, and then click on the Less... link, the search terms you entered in the two hidden rows will not be used in your search.

The second drop-down list connects the term on this line with the one that follows it:

And
Both words/phrases must appear in the article
Or
At least one of the words/phrases entered must appear in the article
Same Sentence
Both words/phrases must appear within the same sentence
Same Paragraph
Both words/phrases must appear within the same paragraph
Within 5 Words
All words/phrases must appear within five words of each other
Note: If you click on the More... link, add search terms in the two additional rows, and then click on the Less... link, the search terms you entered in the two hidden rows will not be used in your search.
SearchTo begin the search, click on the Search button.
Add index terms

To add index terms, first select the Show link. Then select any combination of Index Terms to add to your search from the Industry, Subject or Country/Region lists.

  • Select up to ten items from any or all checkbox lists
  • Click on the Exclude from Search checkbox beneath a list to exclude any results that match the Index Terms you have selected in the list.
  • Click on the Hide link to collapse this section or the Show link to display it again.
  • If you select some Index Terms and then choose to hide the Index Terms section, the Index Terms you have selected will not be used in your search.
Sources

First, select a source category from the drop-down list. Then, if appropriate, select one or more sources from the checklist.

"I" icon
To learn more about the contents of a source, click on the "i" icon to the right of the drop-down list. The document that appears generally explains such things as: coverage, frequency, update schedule, content summary, publisher and available document sections. If the What do we cover? link is available, you can click on it to display a list of the available sources, grouped by publisher.
Exclude Newswires
Click on the checkbox to exclude newswires.
Exclude non-business articles
Excludes lifestyle and entertainment, birth and wedding announcements, obituaries, community events, sports, weather, and similar articles.
Duplicate Options

Duplicate options lets you choose whether or not you want to use similarity analysis to process your search results. For more information about duplicate options, see What are duplicate options?

Choose the type of similarity analysis you want from the Duplicate Options drop-down list:

Off
No similarity analysis. If similarity analysis has already been performed, the results list is regenerated without similarity analysis.
On - High similarity
Documents must be nearly identical in order for the service to include them in the same group of similar documents.
On - Moderate similarity
Documents with relatively less similarity can be included in the same group of similar documents.
Specify date

You may narrow your search to documents published on a specific day or within the date range you specify. You have several options:

All available dates
To remove all date restrictions from your search, select All available dates from the drop-down list.
Today
To restrict your search to only results from the current day, select this option.
Date is...
To search a specific day, select the date on which you wish to search.
Date is before...
To search all documents published on or before a specific date, select the Date is before... option from the drop-down list and select the date.
Date is after...
To search all documents published on or after a specific date, select Date is after... in the drop-down list and select the date.
Date is between...
To specify a date range, select the date from which you wish to search in the first field and the date to which you wish to search in the second field.
Select a predefined date restriction
Previous week, Previous month, Previous 3 months, Previous 6 months, Previous year, Previous 2 years, Previous 5 years, Previous 10 years, Previous 20 years.
Previous...
To specify all documents published in the previous n days, weeks, months or years, select Previous and select the value and the units of time (days, weeks, months, or years) across which you wish to search.
Custom
To base your search on a custom date range, select Custom and specify the start month, day, and end month.
