Search Using the Advanced Search Form
With the Advanced Search form, you can use the available tools to focus your search to find specific results. The form includes wizard-like tools to help you more easily create a search query string (or you can type a query string directly in search box.) A date filter helps you refine your search to a specific date range, and if you want to search in a specific source, you can search for that source directly on the form.
To use learn more about this feature, check out this video, and then complete the steps listed below:
To use the Advanced Search form:
- Select the Search > Home tab.
- Select the Advanced Search link below the search box. The Advanced Search page appears.
- Enter your search term or phrase in the search box. You can use Term Connectors to define multiple terms on which you want to search, and Proximity Connectors to define relationships between these terms.
- The Search Everything box below the search box provides options for choosing the type of content you want to search in.
- Click Select a different content type to choose a specific content type. For example, if you choose News from this drop-down, the resulting form will include the options you'd want when searching news sources.
- Based on the content type you choose, the form may include these sections:
- Terms: This section allows you to filter your search with the following options: All of these terms, Any of these terms, This exact phrase, Exclude these terms. Click on the Add button to include the filter in your current search.
- Document Segments/Fields: This section allows you to restrict your search to a specific part or segment of a document, such as the court that heard the case or the judge who wrote the opinion. Different types of documents have different segments. For instance, a company profile doesn't have the same segments as a newspaper article. The following options are available depending on which search form you are on. (See the list below of potential segments you can use.)
- Once your search query is formed, click the Search button. Your search is submitted and any results found are displayed in your search Results.
