What is LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology?
LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology is a rule-based automated classification system that analyses and tags online documents for content associated with specific subjects, industries, companies, organizations, people, and places. Here’s an abbreviated description of how it works:
- Subject experts and information professionals create index terms. Each index term contains words, phrases, and rules (i.e., complex relationships that must exist between the words and phrases) designed to identify specific content. The experts thoroughly test each index term to ensure that the collection of words, phrases, and rules it contains accurately identifies the exact content for which it is designed.
- When documents are added to LexisNexis sources, each document is analysed to determine the content it contains. When a document is found to contain a set of words, phrases, and relationships that match an existing index term, that index term is stored with the document. Depending on a document's content, one or more index terms may be associated with it.
- Later, when a user bases a search on one or more of the index terms (by adding index terms or search topics to the search), the service identifies the documents containing those index terms.
