How do I use the Legal Issue Trail?

The Legal Issue Trail lists cases that cite to the case you are viewing as well as cases your case has cited - for a specific legal issue or point of law. Not all legal documents have a Legal Issue Trail.

  1. Run a search.
  2. From your results, display a case law document in full view.
  3. Click Activate Passages under Legal Issue Trail in the right pane. The passages in the document that contain references to specific legal issues will be outlined. (To remove the passage outlines, select Deactivate Passages in the right frame.)
  4. Click an outlined passage in the document to display its Legal Issue Trail. The list of citations for that passage appears, with the passage you selected displayed at the top of the citation list.
  5. Do one of the following:

    Open a document to see how it treats your legal issueClick the document name in the list of citations. The document appears with passages outlined and scrolls to the passage shown in the citation list.
    Return to your list of search results from an open document

    Select Results List at the top right of the page.

    View the definition of a Shepard's Signal™ indicatorLeave your mouse pointer over the signal for a few seconds.
    Sort the citation list in a different order (the default order is by relevance)Select an option from the Sort by list at the top right of the page.
