Practical Guidance documents

In addition to its useful forms, Practical Guidance gives you access to a vast amount of guidance and useful information through its many documents and articles. When you select a document, its full text appears in a new page. Your search results and other documents remain accessible so that you can easily return to them as you continue your research. Additional information about the document and tools for working with it are are also located on the page.

The table below briefly describes the tools you can use to work with most documents in Practical Guidance.

Tools	This drop-down list appears when you select text in a document. Tools you may see listed include the following: Copy Select this to copy the selected section of document text to your computer's clipboard. From the clipboard, you can paste the text into other programs (such as a word processor, spreadsheet, email, and so forth). For more information, see How do I copy text to the clipboard. Add to folder Select this to save a selected section of text to a Practical Guidance folder. For more information, see How do I save text to a folder. Add to search Select this to search Practical Guidance for the selected text. Annotate Select this to add your own notes to the selected text. For more information, see How do I make annotations in a document. Highlight Select this to highlight the selected text in the document. For more information, see How do I highlight text in a document.
	Select this to save the entire document to a working folder in Practical Guidance. For more information, see How do I save my research.
	Click the delivery icon drop-down for the type of delivery you want to complete in the delivery toolbar.
Shepardize^® this document	Select this to Shepardize the document. Shepardizing™ the current citation verifies whether the case is still good, and provides a report listing other cases that have cited your case. Note: This option does not appear for documents in Practical Guidance, Briefs, Secondary Materials, or Articles.
Go to	This drop-down list appears at the top of document pages. The list displays the document's section headings, allowing you to navigate quickly through longer documents.
Document Title	The title of the document.
Shepard's Signal™ indicator	Indicates the value of the case as a precedent. You can select the indicator to Shepardize the case and display the current Shepard's^® report with a list of other legal authorities that have cited your case. (To see a definition of the signal indicator, leave your mouse pointer over the signal for a few seconds.) Note: These indicators only appear for the Case content type.
Reporter	Indicates the reporters for the document. If more than one reporter is displayed, you can select a different reporter name to display the document in that reporter. Note: Reporters only appear in Briefs, Cases, and Admin topic documents.
	When you see these icons, you can select them to move through the document. These arrows take you from one search term to another (if you found the document using a search), or from one page to another (for documents such as Cases). Tip: If there is a field with a number between the arrows, you can enter a page number and select an arrow to go to a specific page.
About This Document	This area contains links to information related to the case, plus several other types of documents. The items appearing in this section depend on what is available for the document you're viewing. Items you may see include: Documents Referencing this Citation Select Search for (*citation*) to search for documents that contain a reference to this citation anywhere within them. All documents containing the citation will open in a new tab, regardless of any specific content type, jurisdiction, practice area, or "Start in" selections you made before your search. Legal Topic Summaries Select View reports to open a summary of a legal topic, including definitions of terms related to the topic and links to the full text of seminal cases heard on the topic. Legal Issue Trail Select Activate Passages to display cases that cite to the case you are viewing as well as cases your case has cited - for a specific legal issue or point of law. Original Source Image Select this to open a PDF document of the official version of the case. Related Court Materials Dockets, Briefs, Motions, and Pleadings related to the document. Dockets Select this link to choose from a list of related dockets that you can view. Briefs Select this for the written legal arguments stating the legal reasons for a case based on statutes, regulations, case precedents, legal texts, and reasoning applied to facts in the particular situation. Motions Select this for the formal written requests made to the judge by a party in the case. Case Analysis Contains expert analysis of the case. Article Analysis Select this to open a document containing analysis by eminent experts.
