Add Non-HotDocs Files to a Template Library

HotDocs Version:HD6, HD2005, HD2006, HD2007, HD2008, HD2009
Word Processor:Microsoft Word, WordPerfect
Added to Knowledge Base:

In addition to adding standard HotDocs files, such as templates, component files, and URLs to a template library, you can also add other files, such as word processor documents, PDF files, executable (.EXE) files, and compiled HTML (.CHM) files, just to name a few.

Note: To add these non-standard files to a library, you must make sure HotDocs knows what application to use to open the file. (For example, if you add an image file to the library, HotDocs must know what application to launch in order for you to view the image.) Most files already have this association defined; however, you can set up your own file associations using Windows. For details, search the Windows help file for the keywords file association or file name extensions.

To add non-HotDocs files to a template library

  1. At the HotDocs template library, click the Add button. The Add Item dialog box appears.
  2. Click the Browse button. The Add Item File Name dialog box appears.
  3. Navigate to the folder that contains the file you want to add to the library.
  4. Click the Files of type drop-down button and choose All Files (*.*). The contents listed in the box change to include all files located in the folder.
  5. Choose the file and click OK. The Add Item dialog box appears again.
  6. Optionally, enter a Title and/or Description.

Now, when a user either selects the item and clicks Assemble, or double-clicks the item's icon, the application associated with the file launches and the file is opened.

Note: You can also drag files from Windows Explorer into the template list. Then you can modify the properties (title and description) of the item by selecting it and clicking the Properties button.
